Welcome Letters from Dartmouth’s New Principal and Assistant Principal

May 25, 2022

Dartmouth Eagle Parents, Students, Staff, and Community,

I am honored and excited to be announced as the newest Principal of Dartmouth Middle School.  I have been thoroughly amazed at my introduction to the Union School District and community so far.  I can’t wait to become a part of your great learning community and help to continue the wonderful traditions of Dartmouth while working with the staff to do great things in the future.

I arrive at Dartmouth with 24 years of experience in education thus far.  I began my career in Iowa where I taught Social Studies at the high school level.  My journey then took me to Southern California where I taught middle school.  My career as an administrator began at that point and took me to my current district where I’ve been for 19 years.  That career has consisted of ten years as an Assistant Principal, two years as a Coordinator of Special Education and I’m just finishing up my 7th year as the Principal of Terrace Hills Middle School. However, to all of you, I am the newest Dartmouth Eagle and promise to work tirelessly to show you my passion for helping students.

On a professional level, I share the Union School District’s commitment to fostering student growth socially, emotionally and academically.  Middle school can be a challenging time for many of our students, especially after what we’ve all been through these last few years, and I am a firm believer that addressing the whole child is our mission as educators.  I know that as parents you have goals and dreams for each of your children and we want to work to set students on the path to making those happen.

On a personal level, I have a son who is graduating high school and going off to college this fall – to realize his own set of goals and dreams.  I’m a huge sports fan and also love to travel.

I’m incredibly excited to begin this adventure with you and can’t wait to meet all of the parents and community members whose dedication and input we embrace.  Staff and students – I’m even more excited to get to spend my days with you – laughing, learning and serving our respective missions as educators and scholars at Dartmouth.

Go Eagles!!

To the Dartmouth Staff, Community, and Extended Families,

Life is a marvelous adventure that I am excited to share with you. As I set my sails from Branham High School to your beautiful school, I do so with utter pride and excitement. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than serving others with honor, courage, and commitment. I look forward to starting this new journey in my educational career with you.

A little bit about myself. I was born and raised in the Garlic Capital of the World (Gilroy) to Mexican immigrants. My life throughout my K12 experience was met with much adversity. With being an English learner, poverty, broken home, domestic violence, gang violence and displacement, I was not a motivated student. The hopes of a higher education, or a life of success, did not seem like a possibility, yet I overcame them. Through these experiences I learned many valuable lessons that I use to empower our youth, so that they may weather any storms that may come their way.

I also come to you after over 21 years of honorable service to our great nation as a U.S. Marine. I enlisted out of high school, rose through the ranks, earned my degree, and then became a commissioned officer. I served at the lowest levels of leadership and at the highest, as a commanding officer in and out of combat. I have seen the worst of humanity and the very best.

Based off my leadership and military experience, the Marines selected me to earn my masters at George Washington University so that I may teach at the K16 level as an adjunct professor at the United States Naval Academy. From there, I retired and began my K12 educational career at Campbell Union High School District and earned my doctorate in Educational Leadership. This is my fifth year of K12 service, and it is with absolute honor that I begin my K8 journey with you!

I look forward to getting to know everyone as we strive to help each other achieve our dreams. If you see me walking by in a cowboy hat and boots, please say hi, we are in this together!

Sincerely,

Dr. Richard Ruiz
