What’s it about? Rosalind, the daughter of Duke Senior, a banished Duke, is raised at the court of Duke Frederick (who is younger brother to Duke Senior and who took over his Dukedom), with her cousin Celia (daughter to Duke Frederick). She falls in love with a young man named Orlando, but before she can even think twice about it, she is banished by Duke Frederick, who threatens death if she comes near the court again. Celia, being Rosalind's best friend, goes with Rosalind (who is disguised as a boy, Ganymede) and Touchstone, the court's fool, to the forest of Arden. Upon their arrival in the forest, they happen upon Orlando and his manservant, who are fleeing the wrath of Orlando's eldest brother, Oliver. What follows is an elaborate scheme devised by the cross-dressing Rosalind to find out the truth of Orlando's supposed passion for her, and to further capture his heart, through the witty and mischievous façade of Ganymede.

When are auditions? Tuesday, September 3, from 3:00 until 5:00 will be for reading through the script and passing out audition paperwork. Wednesday, September 4 we will finish paperwork and reading the script. There should also be time to hear each actor read individually. Thursday (and possibly Friday) will be for callbacks.

What happens during auditions? During the first days, we will read through the entire script to get a sense of the “big picture.” We will read many different ways, for example, chorally with the entire group reading in unison, or having all of the boys read one part and all of the girls read another. We may read around the circle with each person taking the next line, as it comes. I may ask certain people to read certain scenes as we progress. At the end of the audition, you’ll get your audition form and audition sides to prepare for Wednesday. That day, I’ll collect forms, take pictures, and hear each actor recite at least one speech. This last activity will take place outside, in the area where we will be performing.

What are callbacks? Callbacks are for narrowing down the field to to actors that we need another look at. I may ask to hear you read from the script or maybe play your instrument. I need to see how you look and sound with others onstage.

What happens if I am cast? A cast list will be posted along with a meeting time for the first rehearsal. All cast members and their parents must sign a participation contract and commit to the production. Actors must attend all required rehearsals and behave in a safe, professional manner or they will be dismissed. Participating in DMS athletics at the same time as the play is NOT possible. Parents of cast members will also have responsibilities such as volunteering time, providing their student’s costume, and donating snacks for sale during the performances.

When are rehearsals? Rehearsals are generally scheduled Monday thru Friday from 3:00 until 4:30, although occasionally they may finish as early as 4:00 or as late as 5:00. Not all parts rehearse on all days; the schedule will vary. Please read your schedules carefully! Unexcused absences and/or chronic misbehavior at rehearsals will result in removal from the cast!

When are performances? Dress rehearsals and performances will take place during the week of October 23 - 26. Monday and Tuesday will be dress rehearsals, Wednesday will be a Preview, and Thursday through Saturday will be our run of performances. There may also be shows arranged for student groups during the school day.

Will it be any fun? It promises to be a lot of work, yet thou shalt have a LOT OF FUN! Or as Shakespeare wrote, “Awake the pert and nimble spirit of mirth!”

As You Like It Character List

ORLANDO - The youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys, he has all the qualities of a gentleman, despite the fact his brother, Oliver, has prevented him from being properly educated. He falls in love with Rosalind.

OLIVER - The older brother of Orlando, he is envious of his younger brother and tries to have him killed.

ADAM - Adam is an elderly servant of the de Boys family.

DENNIS - Dennis is a servant to Oliver.

CHARLES - Charles is a wrestler at Duke Frederick’s court.

ROSALIND - She is the daughter of Duke Senior. Although she is dressed as a boy (Ganymede) for much of the play, she is in love with Orlando. She is very quick-witted!

DUKE FREDERICK - He is the younger brother of Duke Senior. He has deposed and banished his brother and now rules. He is moody and suspicious.

TOUCHSTONE - Touchstone is a professional comedian, a “fool” who accompanies Rosalind and Celia into the Forest of Arden.

JAQUES - He is a courtier to Duke Senior and lives in the Forest with him. He is a “melancholy” fellow given to a cynical view of the world and society. He delivers the

“7 Ages of Man” speech.

AMIENS - Amiens is a courtier of Duke Senior who joins him in the Forest.

CORIN - Corin is a wise old shepherd. Although he is simple, he is definitely not foolish.

SILVIUS - He is a silly young shepherd desperately in love with Phebe.

PHEBE - Phebe is a young shepherdess. She is cruel to Silvius and mocks him. She falls in love with Ganymede (who is, of course, Rosalind in disguise).

WILLIAM - William is a simple country lad in love with Audrey.

SIR OLIVER MARTEXT - Sir Martext is a simple country priest.

HYMEN - Hymen is the God of Marriage.
